Context

One of the poorest countries in the world, Burundi includes over 830 000 orphans and vulnerable children - approximately 11% of the population - while 66% of the population is under the age of 25.

Since 2008, AMADE Mondiale supports AMADE Burundi's integrated program to provide community care for OVC and reinforce the communities' capacity to cover the children's needs on their own.
This program already allowed more than 38 000 OVC to access a regular scholarship. It has also supported more than 36 000 guardians families toward financial autonomy.

More specifically, the action focused on family-leaders orphans - young boys and girls between 16 and 18 years old, forced to abandon school for work in order to cover their family's essential needs. Since 2008, 300 of them received a professional training and support to integration (with a 100% result), to ensure sufficient and stable income.

Based on this expérience, AMADE aims to reinforce the program to make this initiative sustainable.

Objectives

General objective: contribute to reinforce the financial autonomy of 105 family-leaders orphans from Bujumbura Mairie and Bururi

Specific objectives
  • Ensure the professional training of the orphans
  • Guarantee their long-term professional integration

Activities

AMADE Burundi's staff has already identified 105 beneficiaries among the most vulnerable, in the areas of Bujumbura Mairie and Bururi.

These orphans are currently benefiting from a professional training over the next 6 months - 3 of them being dedicated to vocational training courses. The activity sectors chosen for the program are sewing and catering.

Once the training is achieved, the orphans will be supported toward their professional integration, which will include assistance to job-seeking of to launch their own income-generating activity. The program aims especially to develop strong partnerships with the private sector to guarantee long-term results.
